It has been about three months since the last update of "Where are the Sears Houses?"  In that time, the national database of Sears houses eclipsed the 10,000 house mark, which means it's time for another update of "Where are the Sears Houses?" Here is the breakdown of location of houses by state based on approximately 10,000 homes in the database. Let's take a look!

As of this date, Sears houses have been located in 44 states, the District of Columbia and the Provinces of Alberta and Ontario, Canada. This is an increase of 2 states since the last update. The new states to the national database where at least one example of a Sears house are located are Mississippi and Washington.

The following is a breakdown of the states that have the largest number of identified Sears homes.

1. Ohio (2100+ homes): Ohio leads the way again with over 2,150 homes. Houses identified through mortgage and deed records accounted for a number of the new additions, helping to boost the total number of authenticated houses on the list. Ohio continues to accounts for over 20% of the houses on the list.

2. Illinois (1900+ homes): Illinois continues to hold onto second place on the list. While Ohio continues to hold a sizeable lead over Illinois, the gap narrowed slightly since the last update.

3. Pennsylvania (1400+ homes): Pennsylvania maintains a solid third with the addition of almost 100 new homes since the last update.

4. New York (1100+ homes): New York continues to slowly move towards the 1200 home mark.

5. Michigan (800+ homes): Michigan added a few new homes to move past the 850 home mark and continues to sit in fifth place.

6. Indiana (300+): Indiana is about a dozen homes away from reaching 400.

7. Maryland (300+): Maryland added a handful of homes.

8. Washington DC (300): Washington DC dropped by 1 house due to a demolition. As of today, DC is at exactly 300 homes.

9. New Jersey (200+): New Jersey added 25 new homes since the last update pushing it past 250 homes.

10. Wisconsin (175+): Wisconsin is just one house short of 200. I know it will clear that by the next update.

11. Virginia (150+):  As in the last update, Virginia continues to lead Kentucky by a single house!

12. Kentucky (150+): Kentucky is just behind Virginia as both continue to inch their way towards 175 houses.

Currently, there are 12 states where at least 100 Sears houses have been located in the state but Missouri is closing in on the 100 home total. In previous updates, the top 10 states accounted for over 94% of the total houses located. In this update, that percentage is just over 90%.

The national database of Sears Modern Homes is the collective work of a number of kit house researchers located across the country. The sources of the information in the database include the personal work of those researchers, the work of other kit house researchers, publicly available resources including newspapers and websites and information provided by home owners and other members of the public with an interest in kit houses.

  1. We have to be missing big pieces in Indiana and Kentucky. I need to get across the river again and see what's there. I'm not worried about Ohio.......yet.......

  2. Interesting numbers! Missouri is a tough nut to crack... who knows if we'll ever get to 100.
Thanks for putting this all together.

  4. I think the house my husband and I own in Flint MI resembles a kit house. It was built in 1927. The whole neighborhood resembles different styles of these houses found in the catalog. How do we confirm that our house is one?

  5. My family and I live in a Rodessa Sear home that was built in 1919. We purchased it in 2004 from the original owners daughter who lived here her entire life until going into a nursing home. It is located in Harleysville, PA. I can send you a picture if you are interested.

  8. Hi, how do I find out if my house is on the list ? I just found out it’s a Sears Kit house when the original owners relative dropped off the blueprints to the house.
