Where are the Sears Houses - November 2020 Edition

Sears Lynnhaven - Bay City, Michigan

It's been about five months since the last update of "Where are the Sears Houses". While this odd year continues on so does the search for Sears houses. While many of us took advantage of the summer weather to enjoy a bit of relief from being cooped up all spring, we still managed to find and add houses to the list, pushing past the 13,000 house mark. That means it's time for another update of "Where are the Sears Houses?" Here is the breakdown of location of houses by state based on approximately 13,000 homes in the database. Let's take a look!

As of this date, Sears houses have been located in 46 states, the District of Columbia and the Provinces of Alberta and Ontario, Canada.

The following is a breakdown of the states that have the largest number of identified Sears homes.

1. Ohio (2700+ homes): Ohio continues to have the most documented homes with over 2,700 homes, accounting for 21% of the houses on the list.

2. Illinois (2300+ homes): Illinois remains a solid second on the list. The number of homes from Illinois account for 18% of the houses on the list.

3. Pennsylvania (1700+ homes): Pennsylvania added 61 homes to the list and maintains its third place position as it closes in on 1,800 homes.

4. New York (1600+ homes): For the second update in a row, New York added the most homes since the last update with over 130 homes joining the list.

5. Michigan (1000+ homes): Michigan added over 20 homes and crossed the 1,000 home mark, the fifth state to do so.

6. Indiana (700+): For the second update in a row, Indiana accounted for the second highest number of new homes added to the list, easily outpacing its next closest competitor.

7. New Jersey (600+): New Jersey added fewer homes than the last update but it continues to hold onto seventh place.

8. Maryland (300+): Maryland added 30 homes as it closes in on 350 homes.

9. Washington DC (308): Washington DC added one house since the last update.

10. Virginia (200+): Virginia only added a handful of homes since the last update but continues to hold onto tenth place on the list.

11. Wisconsin (200+): Wisconsin added a few homes and continues to stay at number eleven on the list.

12. Kentucky (200+): Kentucky added 9 homes and is closing in on Wisconsin. For now, it remains at twelfth place.

13. Connecticut (100+): Connecticut added enough new houses to push past Missouri and into thirteenth place.

14. Missouri (100+): Missouri is just a few homes ahead and behind the next closest states!

15. Massachusetts (100+): A few houses were found in Massachusetts as it tracks closely with Connecticut and Missouri.

Currently, there are 15 states where at least 100 Sears houses have been located within the state. The top 10 states account for 87% of the total number of houses on the list.

The national database of Sears Modern Homes is the collective work of a number of kit house researchers located across the country. The sources of the information in the database include the personal work of those researchers, the work of other kit house researchers, publicly available resources including newspapers and websites and information provided by home owners and other members of the public with an interest in kit houses.

  1. How do we add our homes to the list? We live in Savage, MD and have a Fullerton model built in 1927.
